After a wonderful start to the month we caught a storm that nearly stopped the Boston Marathon and then headed up to Canada! Here are a few photos from this morning!

Early April

Well, in early April we had some gorgeous weather! I went for a walk down the third concession and took along my camera. I made it down to the wetland and rejoiced at the sight of willow catkins bursting forth. Beautiful, but, as it turned out, premature! So white, so hopeful!

On the way back the light on this old metal gate caught my eye.

Cold as the Grave

I had to drive into Perth at 7 this morning to drop Colin off at school for a basketball practice. It was frosty out and the sun was shining (for once!). I decided to drive around the town and I passed this grave yard. The long shadows falling across the stones and the sculpted snow was so beautiful I had to stop and take a few photos!

Cold enough to freeze....what?

During this cold snap we have had temperatures as low as -34 Celsius with the wind chill. One morning my mom called to say she had seen someone on morning TV toss a cup of hot coffee in the air. Apparently it turned to steam and fell to the ground in crystals. I had to try this, so I took a cup of boiling water and stepped into the deep freeze. I tossed the water high into the air and it was steam and crystals before it got five feet above me. This was so cool that I immediately showed David and Colin and told everyone I knew to give it a try.

The lovely Marilyn was captured on film in mid toss by her husband Michael (thanks guys!) Amazing! You should try it too. I did find that once the temperature got much over minus 20 it didn't work as well. Early morning or at night when the temperature plummets seems to work best.

Warm for January!

Check out the temperature on our front porch today - this is in the sun but outside! I liked the shadows as much as the temperature.

The Day after Christmas

Christmas was green and brown but the day after we had a beautiful dump of fluffy white snow that settled on every branch.

Here the snow highlights the contours of my cedar fence.

Late Afternoon

I took these photos at about 4 pm when I took the dogs for a walk.
The light was dying but the sky was amazing. The trees crackled with ice and the path was strewn with fallen branches

An all day shower of freezing rain made for some amazing late afternoon photos. Just look at the I can't wait for the light tomorrow!

Chair and leaves

The leaves in this photo, taken less than a month ago, have turned brown and blown away. I will have to embrace the many subtle shades of brown that mark the onset of winter but with all the grey weather we have seen these last three weeks a spot of gold wouldn't hurt!

Til the Cows Come Home!

We live in the beautiful Lanark Highlands, home of the patented fence. This fence was designed to stand solidly without digging in posts. It is almost impossible to dig post holes here because we are in Canadian shield - rock country!
The fence seems to be doing a fine job keeping these cattle in.
